Ireland: Gaelscoil Gets Good Marks for English

There’s uproar in Ireland as a new study challenges the findings on the standard of English among pupils in the school at the heart of the row about Irish language education. An inspectors’ report on Gaelscoil Mhic Eamainn in Tralee, Co Kerry, sparked the controversial decision by Education Minister Mary Hanafin to oblige all-Irish schools to introduce English language teaching no later than the start of the second term in junior infant class.

The minister provoked a storm of protest from Irish language organisations, which favour complete immersion in the Irish language in the early school years, and her decision is on hold pending a judicial review. Fight, fight, fight…
