The huge development of the internet over the past few years has meant that a great many students are now purchasing custom essays online and this has recently caused a great deal of controversy in the education hierarchy. So, how has the transition from the traditional essay banks to custom essay sites and the further development of personalised essay sites hit the world of academia, and under which conditions can the use of these services be deemed to be perfectly reasonable and legitimate? Traditional essay banks, which still exist today, were basically purveyors of pre-written essays allowing students to root around and find a piece of work that would benefit their studies. There were many issues associated with the use of essay banks, for example not only did they rarely provide the relevant material for the student, but they were far from unique and therefore failed to deliver the required research for the customer. This naturally meant that you would have to have spent countless hours searching the essay banks, often having to purchase the right to view essays, in order to obtain a reasonable amount of research from which to refer. Not only was this extremely time consuming, but it could often prove very expensive; students spending a great amount of time and money only to end up with poor quality reference materials to help them with their studies. There was no such thing as free essays.

The many problems associated with such essay banks led to birth of the custom essays and custom essay sites. These sites set out to resolve the problems of essay banks by providing essays that were aimed specifically to the customers’ question, thus enabling students to purchase a model answer specific to their requirements without having to trawl the internet. Eventually, this had adverse effects on the market, with many custom essay sites using this as an opportunity to use their services to build up their own essay banks, as well as using the existing essay banks to create custom research from. Customers were essentially buying an often wholly plagiarised piece taken from, or soon to appear on an essay bank: we were back to the exact same problem. Essentially, they were paying for a piece of research that would soon benefit other students, therefore taking away any competitive edge that the model answer would have offered them.
The Next Phase
Next up was the innovative personalised essay service. These services provided a piece of research that was custom-written to the exact requirements of the customer; these were not free essays but they were scanned for plagiarism, ensuring each piece of work is unique, they would not appear on an essay bank or database for a fair period of time and would never be resold. If used sensibly, these services merely offer substantial support to customers, just as a private tutor would.
An Essay Community
The most recent stage in the evolution of essay assistance is the research paper and coursework assistance community.
