Alternative careers: Criminal Justice

In this post we continue our journey into the investigation of alternative career options for those wishing to get out of language teaching. Have you ever considered criminal justice? If not, now might be the time to look into this exciting career.

Obtaining an online criminal justice degree opens the door to a vast array of career choices – beyond what you have experienced as a language teacher – in the exciting field of criminal justice. In layman’s terms, criminal justice is the term given to the punishment of wrongdoers, as well as crime prevention, with the utilization of law enforcement, judiciary, corrections and probation resources.

If you want to work in the criminal justice profession, you are going to need a bachelor degree in either criminal justice, social work, or psychology or perhaps some other related area. Increasingly, an online criminal justice degree is becoming a convenient way to get started in this field. For example, working towards an online criminal justice qualification entails comparable course work to the traditional degree alternative. Certain areas in which such qualifications offer specialization are:

  1. Homeland security and immigration
  2. Private security
  3. Corrections and probation
  4. Forensics
  5. Law enforcement

Among these, the most popular fields are definitely law enforcement and corrections, although these can prepare you for different levels of involvement, from the local through to the federal level. Furthermore, forensic science is growing increasingly fashionable within the criminal justice system, so is now eagerly sought after in degree programs. This is probably because of its high profile in numerous popular TV shows. Online programs will prepare you equally well for the other fields mention, though.

Institutions which put forward social justice degrees typically offer any qualification from an associate degree program through to master’s level. While lower level degrees may be adequate for certain criminal justice careers, others will require greater levels of education. Nevertheless, online courses are not lacking in terms of what they offer, and can be undertaken while still maintaining your teaching career. For instance, every facet of criminal justice is taught in online programs, such as the theory and history, sociological factors, as well as the effects on the local community and the individuals involved. Basically, getting an online criminal justice qualification opens up a wide array of new employment opportunities.
