According to the Irish Independent, ‘Adapting to Diversity: Irish Schools and Newcomer Students‘, compiled by the Economic and Social Research Institute, surveyed 1,200 primary and second-level schools across the country.

Most newcomers do not have English as a first language. Language needs, if not addressed, are seen to hinder the academic development and social integration of newcomer students.

Ireland sets a test for new citizens /2008/11/ireland-sets-a-test-for-new-citizens/ /2008/11/ireland-sets-a-test-for-new-citizens/#comments Sun, 16 Nov 2008 10:35:17 +0000 david /blog/?p=51 Up until just over a decade ago the Republic of Ireland was one of the most culturally and racially homogeneous societies on Earth. In these last ten years or so, a relatively short time, the nation has been radically and rapidly transformed into a multicultural society. Multiculturalism can only mean one thing to us TEFLers; more jobs.

Plans have consequently been laid to assess the English skills of new arrivals in a bid to boost social integration, but concerns are growing that language support will suffer in the economic crisis. How is this being dealt with? Read the full story in the Guardian’s TEFL section.

At present, a school is entitled to one English language support teacher for every 14 newcomer students, up to a maximum of six teachers.
