Here are some higher paying jobs.

IELTS examiner
Being an IELTS examiner is a part-time job working for the British Embassy. They don't get a visa for you and it's optional work up to three weekends a month & they fly you around to different cities and put you up in 5 star hotels for exams. Average 100 RMB per 15 minute speaking exam and 50 RMB per essay (average 10-15 essays per hour). Some people would only do IELTS and live on that, others, like me had a job for housing and visa and did IELTS as extra money.

You will need:
• An undergraduate degree or a qualification which can be demonstrated to be equivalent to an undergraduate degree.
• A recognised qualification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). • At least 3 years’ full time (or the equivalent part time) relevant TESOL teaching experience (post certificate level qualification).
• The required professional attributes and interpersonal skills.
Recruitment information packs for applicants can be downloaded from www.britishcouncil.org/china-aboutus-jobvacancy.htm
Please direct any queries or applications to exapps@britishcouncil.org.cn

Cambridge Examiner
You usually have to get nominitated to be an examiner, after you pass training you can do the real exams and mock exams. I just did mock exams here in Peru and made about 450 usd for 22 hours of work. So it's nice extra cash,

Dipont
Usually only expect licensed teachers, but you can make at least 15,000 a month.
www.dipont-edu.org

NCUK
YOu'll work in universities, they don't have many opening.
http://www.ncuk.ac.uk

Shanghai Ocean AIEN Institute,
teach 19 hrs, great uni kids, high quality academics, 12600/p/m.

SBC Kaplan also in Shanghai,16000 after tax plus a 5000/pm housing allowance, untaxed. 16 classes a week

Foreign Language schools
They usually offer lots more than the typical university. YOu'll have to work more hours though.

Wallstreet
They offered me 16,000 but nothing else.

No salary mentioned

SOmetimes if no salary is mentioned, it means that they pay a high salary

One thing to note about Ocean (above), which is where I'm currently working. It's not in central Shanghai. It's in a place called Lingang New Town, about 45 minutes from the end of Line 2. Most teachers are married and live out there and are pretty happy- it's very clean and green and quite newly developed-- but there really aren't much in the way of diversions out there if you are single. I was fine when I lived in Century Park in Shanghai, about an hour from work and about 15 minutes from the city centre by metro...but then my landlord sold my flat, gave me a week to move out, and now I'm living with my boyfriend in the French Concession, commuting 5 hours a day. Argh! Having had my karma so suddenly readjusted, it made me think twice about moving back to my old neighbourhood-- I kinda prefer where I am now, despite the commute.

One place I'm applying to is the Shanghai International High School, which is a public school so the kids aren't brutes apparently. I've demo'd there already and have been asked to come back for more interviewing- it's pretty rigourous by Chinese hiring standards. They seem to pay around $2000-$2200 (in USD) with free apartment on campus, down by the botanical gardens. There's also a fairly hefty bonus/airfare allowance at the end of the year. I don't know the details though. It's all gross pay- don't know the net.

One more thing: if they don't offer housing, expect to pay at least 3000 rmb for a furnished flat. At least. Out where my school is, you can get one for 1500rmb but it's an hour from Shanghai. My boyfriend pays 5500 and I paid 3800. Everything we looked at under 3000 was either scary or incredibly, impossibly tiny (and often broken/peeling/skanky). I managed to bargain down my deposit to one month's rent, which took a lot of work. The estate agents fee was 30% of one month's rent. When I got booted out, I had to bargain hard to get compensated but somehow, miraculously, not only did I get my deposit and outstanding rent refunded, but I also got 2 months' rent as compensation--- something that's in standard contracts...in Chinese...and pretty much unheard of, from what I've been told.

Can't you two just live together? It would save on rent.

For the SH intl school, do you have to be a licensed teacher? Sounds like good pay.

We are living together now because I got kicked out of my flat! I like it and it's certainly cheaper, but it's a brutal commute to my workplace as I mentioned. We got separate flats initially because of that- our jobs are on completely opposite ends of the city and we couldn't find an affordable location that was convenient to both of us. We both had sizeable housing allowances so it wasn't really a problem. For my next job, I definitely want to be living where I am now.

The High School job doesn't require licensing if you are experienced and certified (CELTA, whatever).

I just wanted to add an update to my job search and some things I've found.

The high school thing seems to have fallen through- or maybe they're just taking their time getting back to me. It's been three weeks since my demo and the HOD said she'd email me after her conference, which would have been last Monday. No word yet, so I'm guessing my karma isn't leading me there.

However, I did impulsively email the people who had offered us both a position in an Australian joint-venture up in Dalian last year, which we turned down as we were aiming for Shanghai. They had offered a pretty sweet contract for China- 12k, inc housing allowance (basically 10k plus 2k). Anyway, my boyfriend remembered that they worked with universities around the country, including Shanghai, though their ads never actually advertise positions there. I emailed and within 24 hours I got a reply and an offer- they remembered me from the Dalian interview at Christmas and offered me a position here for September, with a 2k increase in salary to cover the cost of living here.

I forget where their other branches are but I know they are all over the country, inc Dalian, Chengdu, Hangzhou, maybe Suzhou-- can't remember. Starting salary is 10k plus housing. 18 hours/week. Academic English.

They are called Yucui, which is the company that does the joint venture arrangement with the Australian university. So far, in both times I have dealt with them, they've been pretty straight up and decent. I'll keep you updated on how it goes.
